EC2 Instance Connect Failed: Diagnose Access Without Opening Everything

Diagnose EC2 Instance Connect problems by checking instance state, network path, IAM authorization, OS support, and security groups.

An EC2 Instance Connect failure can be caused by instance health, network reachability, IAM permissions, operating-system configuration, or an incompatible connection path. Avoid opening SSH to the world as a shortcut; first identify which connection step fails.

Quick summary: Capture the exact error, confirm the account and Region, identify the layer that failed, and verify a minimal fix. Do not share AWS credentials, session tokens, or secrets with a troubleshooting tool.

Confirm instance and Region

Verify the instance is running, the correct Region and account are selected, and the operating system supports the chosen connection method. Check status checks and any recent network or instance changes.

Identify the connection method

EC2 Instance Connect, EC2 Instance Connect Endpoint, and browser-based connection paths have different prerequisites. Follow the documentation for the exact method and avoid assuming one configuration covers all three.

Practical tip: Change one thing at a time, keep the original error, and avoid sharing credentials, tokens, or unredacted production data.

Review IAM and network controls

Check the caller’s permissions and the security group, subnet routes, network ACLs, and endpoint configuration where applicable. Confirm the required port is reachable from the intended source rather than allowing all inbound addresses.

Check host-level configuration

The operating system must have the relevant SSH service and user configuration in place. Review cloud-init or system logs when available and confirm the target username matches the image and operating system.

Retest using a narrow path

Use an approved source network or endpoint, repeat the connection, and record the exact failure stage. Remove temporary diagnostic changes after the test and document any permanent security-group or IAM adjustment.

Frequently asked questions

Should I allow SSH from 0.0.0.0/0?

No. Prefer a restricted source, VPN, bastion, or supported Instance Connect Endpoint pattern appropriate to your architecture.

Does a running instance guarantee SSH access?

No. Network routes, security groups, host configuration, IAM permissions, and the connection method all matter.
